    The REVERE project:Experiments with the application of probabilistic NLP to systems engineering

    Despite natural language’s well-documented shortcomings as a medium for precise technical description, its use in software-intensive systems engineering remains inescapable. This poses many problems for engineers who must derive problem understanding and synthesise precise solution descriptions from free text. This is true both for the largely unstructured textual descriptions from which system requirements are derived, and for more formal documents, such as standards, which impose requirements on system development processes. This paper describes experiments that we have carried out in the REVERE1 project to investigate the use of probabilistic natural language processing techniques to provide systems engineering support

    Comparison of Two Methodologies for Calibrating Satellite Instruments in the Visible and Near Infrared

    Traditionally, satellite instruments that measure Earth-reflected solar radiation in the visible and near infrared wavelength regions have been calibrated for radiance response in a two-step method. In the first step, the spectral response of the instrument is determined using a nearly monochromatic light source, such a lamp-illuminated monochromator. Such sources only provide a relative spectral response (RSR) for the instrument, since they do not act as calibrated sources of light nor do they typically fill the field-of-view of the instrument. In the second step, the instrument views a calibrated source of broadband light, such as lamp-illuminated integrating sphere. In the traditional method, the RSR and the sphere spectral radiance are combined and, with the instrument's response, determine the absolute spectral radiance responsivity of the instrument. More recently, an absolute calibration system using widely tunable monochromatic laser systems has been developed, Using these sources, the absolute spectral responsivity (ASR) of an instrument can be determined on a wavelength-hy-wavelength basis. From these monochromatic ASRs. the responses of the instrument bands to broadband radiance sources can be calculated directly, eliminating the need for calibrated broadband light sources such as integrating spheres. Here we describe the laser-based calibration and the traditional broad-band source-based calibration of the NPP VIIRS sensor, and compare the derived calibration coefficients for the instrument. Finally, we evaluate the impact of the new calibration approach on the on-orbit performance of the sensor

    Designed to fail : a biopolitics of British Citizenship.

    Tracing a route through the recent 'ugly history' of British citizenship, this article advances two central claims. Firstly, British citizenship has been designed to fail specific groups and populations. Failure, it argues, is a design principle of British citizenship, in the most active and violent sense of the verb to design: to mark out, to indicate, to designate. Secondly, British citizenship is a biopolitics - a field of techniques and practices (legal, social, moral) through which populations are controlled and fashioned. This article begins with the 1981 Nationality Act and the violent conflicts between the police and black communities in Brixton that accompanied the passage of the Act through the British parliament. Employing Michel Foucault's concept of state racism, it argues that the 1981 Nationality Act marked a pivotal moment in the design of British citizenship and has operated as the template for a glut of subsequent nationality legislation that has shaped who can achieve citizenship. The central argument is that the existence of populations of failed citizens within Britain is not an accident of flawed design, but is foundational to British citizenship. For many 'national minorities' the lived realities of biopolitical citizenship stand in stark contradistinction to contemporary governmental accounts of citizenship that stress community cohesion, political participation, social responsibility, rights and pride in shared national belonging

    Attributable costs of enterococcal bloodstream infections in a nonsurgical hospital cohort

    BACKGROUND: Vancomycin-resistant enterococcal (VRE) bloodstream infections (BSI) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: To determine the attributable costs of vancomycin-sensitive (VSE) and VRE BSI and the independent impact of vancomycin-resistance on hospital costs. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of 21,154 non-surgical patients admitted to an academic medical center between 2002 and 2003. Using administrative data, attributable hospital costs (inflation adjusted to 2007)andlengthofstaywereestimatedwithmultivariategeneralizedleastsquares(GLS)modelsandpropensityscorematched−pairs.RESULTS:Thecohortincluded182VSEand94VREBSIcases.Afteradjustmentfordemographics,comorbidities,procedures,non−enterococcalBSI,andearlymortality,theattributablecostsofVSEBSIwere2007) and length of stay were estimated with multivariate generalized least squares (GLS) models and propensity score matched-pairs. RESULTS: The cohort included 182 VSE and 94 VRE BSI cases. After adjustment for demographics, comorbidities, procedures, non-enterococcal BSI, and early mortality, the attributable costs of VSE BSI were 2,250 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1,758–1,758–2,880) in the standard GLS model and 2,023(952,023 (95% CI, 1,588–2,575)inthepropensity−scoreweightedGLSmodelandtheattributablecostsofVREBSIwere2,575) in the propensity-score weighted GLS model and the attributable costs of VRE BSI were 4,479 (95% CI, 3,500–3,500–5,732) in the standard GLS model and 4,036(954,036 (95% CI, 3,170–5,140)inthepropensity−scoreweightedGLSmodel.Themedianofthedifferenceincostsbetweenmatched−pairswas5,140) in the propensity-score weighted GLS model. The median of the difference in costs between matched-pairs was 5,282 (2,042–2,042–8,043) for VSE BSI and 9,949(959,949 (95% CI, 1,579–24,693)forVREBSI.Theattributablecostsofvancomycin−resistancewere24,693) for VRE BSI. The attributable costs of vancomycin-resistance were 1,713 (95% CI, 1,338–1,338–2,192) in the standard GLS model and 1,546(951,546 (95% CI, 1,214–$1,968) in the propensity-score weighted GLS model. Attributable length of stay ranged from 1.1–2.2 days for VSE BSI and 2.2–3.5 days for VRE BSI cases. CONCLUSIONS: VSE and VRE BSI were independently associated with hospital costs and length of stay. Vancomycin-resistance was associated with increased costs

    Crystal electron binding energy and surface work function control of tin dioxide

    The work function of a material is commonly used as an intrinsic reference for band alignment; however, it is notoriously susceptible to extrinsic conditions. Following the classification of Bardeen we calculate values for the bulk binding energy of electrons in rutile-structured SnO2 and the effect of the surface on the work function, thus highlighting the role of the surface in determining the energy levels of a material. Furthermore we demonstrate how, through the use of ultrathin heteroepitaxial oxide layers (SiO2, TiO2, PbO2) at the surface, the work function can be tuned to achieve energy levels commensurate with important technological materials. This approach can be extended from transparent conducting oxides to other semiconducting materials

    Towards precision radial velocity science with SALT’s High-Resolution Spectrograph

    We describe efforts to equip the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) for precision radial velocity (PRV) work. Our current focus is on commissioning the high-stability (HS) mode of the High-Resolution Spectrograph (HRS), the mode intended to support exoplanet science. After replacing the original commercial iodine cell with a custom-built, precisely characterised one and following established best practice in terms of observing strategy and data reduction, this system now delivers 3-4 m/s radial velocity stability on 5th and 6th magnitude stars. Unfortunately, the throughput is compromised by the HRS dichroic split being at 555 nm (i.e. roughly midway through the 100 nm span of the iodine absorption spectrum). Furthermore, SALT’s fixed elevation axis limits the exposure time available for a given target and hence the depth and/or precision achievable with the iodine cell. The HS mode’s simultaneous ThAr option uses the full 370–890 nm passband of the HRS and does not suffer gas cell absorption losses, so it may be more suitable for exoplanet work. The first step was to quantify the internal stability of the spectrograph, which requires simultaneously injecting arc light into the object and calibration fibres. The HS mode’s optical feed was modified accordingly, stability test runs were conducted and the necessary analysis tools were developed. The initial stability test yielded encouraging results and though more testing is still to be done, SAL a laser frequency comb to support the development of HRS PRV capability

    Band Engineering of Carbon Nitride Monolayers by N-Type, P-Type, and Isoelectronic Doping for Photocatalytic Applications

    Since hydrogen fuel involves the highest energy density among all fuels, production of this gas through the solar water splitting approach has been suggested as a green remedy for greenhouse environmental issues due to extensive consumption of fossil fuels. Low-dimensional materials possessing a large surface-to-volume ratio can be a promising candidate to be used for the photocatalytic approach. Here, we used extensive first-principles calculations to investigate the application of newly fabricated members of two-dimensional carbon nitrides including <i>tg</i>-C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub>, <i>hg</i>-C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub>, C<sub>2</sub>N, and C<sub>3</sub>N for water splitting. Band engineering via N-type, P-type, and isoelectronic doping agents such as B, N, P, Si, and Ge was demonstrated for tuning the electronic structure, optimizing solar absorption and band alignment for photocatalysis. Pristine <i>tg</i>-C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub>, <i>hg</i>-C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub>, and C<sub>2</sub>N crystals involve bandgaps of 3.190, 2.772, and 2.465 eV, respectively, which are not proper for water splitting. Among the dopants, Si and Ge dopants can narrow the band gap of carbon nitrides about 0.5–1.0 eV and also increase their optical absorption in the visible spectrum. This study presents the potential for doping with isoelectronic elements to greatly improve the photocatalytic characteristics of carbon nitride nanostructures

    Investigating the New Landscapes of Welfare: Housing Policy, Politics and the Emerging Research Agenda

    As debates about housing form an increasingly important arena of political controversy, much has been written about the new fissures that have appeared as governments not only struggle to reduce public expenditure deficits but also attempt to address problems such as affordability and homelessness. It is widely anticipated that new conflicts will be played out in the private rental market as access to homeownership becomes unrealistic and the supply of social housing diminishes. However, what other tensions might surface; that hitherto have not been subject to the critical gaze of housing research? In this paper, we provide some thoughts on the nascent policy issues as well as the ideological schisms that are likely to develop in coming years, offering suggestions as to how the focus of housing policy research might be reoriented towards a “politics” framework to capture and better understand the conflicts that are likely to arise

    Wage losses in the year after breast cancer: Extent and determinants among Canadian women

Their assessment is made more urgent because more women now participate in the workforce and because breast cancer is managed using multiple treatment modalities that could lead to long work absences. We evaluated wage losses, their determinants, and the associations between wage losses and changes for the worse in the family's financial situation among Canadian women over the first 12 months after diagnosis of early breast cancer. Methods - We conducted a prospective cohort study among women with breast cancer from eight hospitals throughout the province of Quebec. Information that permitted the calculation of wage losses and information on potential determinants of wage losses were collected by three pretested telephone interviews conducted over the year following the start of treatment. Information on medical characteristics was obtained from medical records. The main outcome was the proportion of annual wages lost because of breast cancer. Multivariable analysis of variance using the general linear model was used to identify personal, medical, and employment characteristics associated with the proportion of wages lost. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results - Among 962 eligible breast cancer patients, 800 completed all three interviews. Of these, 459 had a paying job during the month before diagnosis. On average, these working women lost 27% of their projected usual annual wages (median = 19%) after compensation received had been taken into account. Multivariable analysis showed that a higher percentage of lost wages was statistically significantly associated with a lower level of education (Ptrend = .0018), living 50 km or more from the hospital where surgery was performed (P = .070), lower social support (P = .012), having invasive disease (P = .086), receipt of chemotherapy (P < .001), self-employment (P < .001), shorter tenure in the job (Ptrend < .001), and part-time work (P < .001).
